Trusting Terry and other great copywriting clients

In my last post, I went on a bit of a rant about red-flag copywriting clients and how to avoid them. So I thought it was only fair to give some props to the good – and great – clients out there.
Thankfully, these characters make up the bulk of the people I deal with on a daily basis. I have been quite busy with them of late (hence two months since you last heard from me!), and I thank each and everyone of them.
Trusting Terry
Terry knows that his copywriter is an expert in not only writing, but marketing and business. And while Terry might not always “like” the content that the copywriter provides, he knows that him “liking” it has nothing whatsoever to do with whether the copy is going to attract his target audience – and get them to buy his product. So he trusts in the skills, knowledge and experience of the expert.
Passionate Pete
Pete is SO passionate about his business, that his passion rubs off on you. But he is not so passionate that it blinds him to reality. In fact, Passionate Pete has a twin sister – Pragmatic Pauline, and together they make a formidable business team that is a pleasure to work alongside.
Organised Olivia
Olivia pays invoices before they are due, returns briefs on time and makes amends when she says she will. When you work for Olivia, you know that deadlines will be respected and bills will be paid.
Efficient Ellen
A step-up from organised Olivia, with Ellen you know that not only will deadlines be met, but that you will receive information in a timely, effective and easy-to-understand manner. Efficient Ellen will never respond to the query “who’s your target audience” with a vague “women aged between 18-65”. She will know EXACTLY who her ideal client is – right down to the type of shampoo they buy. Efficient Ellen makes it easy to find words that will work.
Respectful Robert
Robert understands that he is not your only client and understands that a freelancer needs strong boundaries. He will not expect you to drop everything because he has an urgent and last-minute request. And he will NEVER ring on a Friday afternoon and expect you to work over the weekend. At least not without offering a hefty rush fee – and cash upfront.
Responsive Rebecca
Rebecca responds to proposals (even if you are unsuccessful), and promptly returns phone calls and emails. She know that you can’t just throw information at you, step away and expect you to work in a vacuum. She needs to be part of the process.
There are many other types of great clients out there – many who possess a little of all these traits. But the one thing they all have in common? Respect. It’s as easy as that.
Who is your favourite type of client? Or do you see yourself in one of the characters above. Would love to hear from you in the comments.
Till next time,
Nicole
